5 MUST-WATCH Art Films for a Rainy Day
Share
If you’re an artist yourself or just someone who enjoys visual art, there are a few movies that beautifully capture the experience of creating or being surrounded by revolutionary art. There are five in particular that I found deeply inspiring. You’re probably curious—what sets them apart? What did they do differently? Well, you’re in for a treat, because these films will let you in on those details.
1) Frida (2002)
I adore her and this movie. Whether or not you’re a fan of her art, once you truly understand her story and where she came from, you’ll realize what an absolute powerhouse she was. Through deep physical injuries and emotional pain, she channeled her experiences into her art and somehow managed to keep loving through all the darkness her soul endured. I remember thinking after watching this movie, “Holy crap, what a strong woman with an absolute warrior spirit!” Also, she was self-taught, which makes her story even cooler.

2) Loving Vincent (2017)
Another self-taught idol. Vincent van Gogh’s life of beauty and darkness is depicted in the most creative way imaginable. Over 125 painters came together to create this cinematic masterpiece, bringing his unique painting style and rich color palette to life. The entire film is animated using hand-painted recreations of his work. You can’t help but empathize with Vincent’s temperament and sensitivity. It’s deeply moving and emotional.

3) Surviving Picasso (1996)
Picasso definitely earned his fame, and you’ll understand that after watching this movie. He was his own salesperson long before modern advertising and marketing existed. He knew how to promote himself and get the word out with confidence and intensity. Not an ounce of self-doubt in him. You’ll also see his disturbing treatment of women, which was nothing short of cruel, but it offers a complex look at how some of the most brilliant and successful figures in history have also been deeply flawed.

4) Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Some incredible actors and actresses come together in this fiery romance. Watching Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz (married for over a decade in real life) play these roles is a treat for any hopeless romantic. It feels like taking a vacation to Spain and peeking into the passionate, messy, and beautiful lives of artists who love and feel deeply. Plus, Penélope Cruz is absolutely hilarious.

5) Mona Lisa Smile (2003)
Another great ensemble cast, mostly women. While it’s not specifically about one artist, it beautifully explores how gender roles and societal expectations have evolved. It shows what it looked like when artists introduced radically new styles that challenged tradition, and it touches on themes of art history and independence that still resonate today.
